"Best Dad Ever"
Our very beloved Roy Clarence Thorell, who was in his 95th year, passed away Wednesday, September 15, 2011, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Roy was born March 2, 1917, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of Linus and Maria Thorell. He married Cora Mickelson on February 5, 1942 in the Logan LDS Temple. With his delightful sense of humor, Roy's life was filled with untiring service and love to his wife, Cora of 69 years, and to his family. Roy graduated from South High School, Utah State University, and the University of Oregon Dental School, where he obtained his degree to practice dentistry. He served our country honorably in the U.S. Navy during both World War II and the Korean War.
Roy loved to have an adventure. When he was younger it was hunting and fishing in Alaska, golfing, learning to fly a stunt plane, diving for lobsters in the bays of San Diego, or backpacking with his daughters through Europe and Asia. The last few years the adventures were in an armchair ... watching sports of all genres and his bi-weekly trips to Costco and the grocery store with his son and grandson. Having lived through the Great Depression, Roy loved to find bargains.
It is hard to describe such a grand man as Roy, but these words may suffice: honesty, integrity, dignity, compassion, and diligence to his duty. Roy, we love you so dearly and will miss you every day. When our time comes, make us breakfast and have it waiting!
Survivors include his beloved wife Cora; a son, Kenneth Roy (Sondra) Thorell; two daughters Karen (David) Reams and Kathy (Mark) Farrell; a sister, Lilly Sperry; 7 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandchild David Paul; a brother (Willard) and 4 sisters (Ellice, Elfie, Irene and Neva).
Funeral services will be held at Noon on Wednesday, September 21, at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, SLC, where friends may call from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. prior to the services. Burial will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. Messages and tributes to the family can be posted at: www.holbrookmortuary.com
