Ruth Arlene Sweat Russell, born on May 12, 1937, in the serene town of Heber, Utah, passed away peacefully from natural causes on April 30, 2026, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her life was a rich tapestry woven with dedication, creativity, and an enduring love for family.
Ruth’s journey through life was marked by her quiet strength and spirited passions. She earned an accounting degree and devoted many years to working in various accounting departments, where her meticulous nature and integrity shone brightly. Yet, beyond the numbers and ledgers, Ruth's true artistry was found in her hands and heart. She loved sewing and quilting—a craft she embraced with the utmost joy. Her quilts were not mere blankets but stories stitched with care and kindness. Generously, she shared these treasures with friends and family and extended her warmth to women and family shelters, bringing comfort and hope to many.
Family was Ruth's everything. In March 1958, she married Robert Russell, with whom she shared the blessing of two children: Debbie and Rick. Though later divorced, the bond woven through years of shared memories remained steadfast. Ruth delighted in the company of her daughter Debbie and her husband John, as well as her son Rick and his wife Dorothy. She cherished her six grandchildren—Shane, Kimberly, Brandon, Amanda, Travis, and John Andrew—whose lives she touched deeply. The glow of her legacy continued through 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, each a living testament to her enduring love.
She also found joy in the presence of her brother Ned Sweat and his wife Anna-Jean, her sister Beth Howarth, and a host of nieces and nephews who admired her spirit. Ruth’s heart was especially warmed by times spent traveling with her sisters and attending the annual Sweat Family reunions, moments rich with laughter and shared history. Camping excursions, visits to the senior center where she played bingo with friends, and the simple, beloved pleasure of family gatherings embodied the life she treasured.
Though gone, Ruth’s influence remains palpable—in the quilts that carry her touch, in the memories of those who knew her, and in the ongoing story of a woman who valued connection above all else. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, and many aunts and uncles who now watch over her heavenly rest.
