Sammy Gonzales, age 79, passed away on June 21, 2026, surrounded by his family.
Sammy was born on May 6, 1947, in Taos, New Mexico, to Jose Felimon and Fannie Gonzales. Sammy married his wife of 42 years, Evangeline (Vangie), in March of 1968.
Sammy served in the US Army during the Vietnam War and then later served as a machinist at Hill Air Force Base, working on the F-4 Phantoms and then later on the F16’s. Sammy had a deep love for music. He enjoyed singing and playing his guitars, mostly New Mexico Spanish music and oldies, and was particularly fond of Elvis songs. He had a lifelong appreciation for Bruce Lee and became a 4th- Degree Blackbelt in Kempo Karate.
He is survived by his children, Jeff (Sherry) Gonzales, Candida (Brad) Rushton, Sammi Gonzales; 12 Grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two brothers and three sisters; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vangie; his parents, Jose Felimon and Fannie Gonzales; two sons, Craig and Rick Gonzales; and his sister, Carmen Sanchez.
Funeral Services will be on Thursday, July 2, 2026, from 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm, with a family gathering one hour prior. It will be held at Memorial Redwood Mortuary and Cemetery, 6500 S Redwood Rd, West Jordan, UT 84084.
