Samuel Arthur Ray, Sr.

Samuel Arthur Ray, Sr. (65) passed away on March 18th, 2023 near his home in West Jordan, UT. Sam was born October 31st, 1957 in Twin Falls, ID to his mother Eva Ennice (Caudill) Ray and father, Dennis Arthur Melton. He is preceded in death by his brothers Hal L., Timothy, and sister Sally Wells, his mother Eva Ennice (Caudill) Ray, Dennis Arthur Melton, Stepdad Jacob Ray, and his grandparents Audrey and Samuel Caudill. Sam is survived by his wife Barbara May Ray; daughters Jessica Hull (Rick), Heather Ray, Tiffany Miera (Dewayne), and Melissa Ray; Sons Sam Ray Jr. (Amanda), Jason Ray (Lauren); and his seven grandchildren Alyssa Ray, Alex Ray, Bryson Ray, Louis Miera, Joseph Miera, Isabella Miera, and Korben Ray.
Sam grew up in Idaho with his parents, his five sisters, and four brothers. He spent most of that time outdoors swimming, fishing, and found a passion for his faith. He dedicated many of his years to the LDS Church and went on to serve a mission in 1977 to Des Moines, IA. When he returned in 1979 he found his way to Utah where he met his wife Barbara of 43 years. They married in the Salt Lake Temple on February 8th, 1980. Together they raised an amazing family with six children, whom he spent all his life working for and held dear to his heart. Shortly after Barbara and Sam married, he began his journey at Memorial Estates (Cemeteries and Mortuaries). Starting in 1981, he took on the role of a grounds crew member for Redwood Cemetery, digging graves by hand and learning the ropes. Over the next few decades, he took on various roles at Memorial such as leadership, vault operations, maintenance, and many more. He was extremely devoted to his work and always went above and beyond what was asked of him. Memorial was like a second family to him and always cherished his time and the experiences he was able to share.
Sam was so strong and full of love. He had so many amazing relationships with everyone he worked with or came to know. He adored his wife, children, and grandchildren very much and wanted nothing but the best for them. He will always be in our hearts and missed dearly.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at the Memorial Murray Mortuary, 5850 South 900 East, Murray, Utah. A viewing for family and friends will be held from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at the Memorial Murray Mortuary. Following the services, the interment will be at the Memorial Redwood Cemetery, 6500 South Redwood Road at approximately 12:30 pm.Service Information
