Sherman Sherwood Smith, age 83, passed away peacefully at home in Kearns, Utah, on October 8, 2025. Born on December 29, 1941, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Sherman lived a full and meaningful life marked by hard work, service, faith, and love for his family.
Sherman proudly served in the United States Marine Corps after high school, working as a mechanic and dreaming of one day building a race car. A true master of all trades, Sherman made his mark in the construction industry skilled in everything from electrical and plumbing to framing, tile, concrete, and beyond. He could fix just about anything and was always the first to lend a hand. If something broke, he believed it could be fixed, and more often than not, he was right.
His hands were rarely idle, if he didn’t have a project; he would find one. Whether he was tinkering under the hood of a car, remodeling a home, or helping a friend with a repair, Sherman’s resourcefulness and know-how were unmatched. His quick wit and practical wisdom made him not only a remarkable handyman but also a treasured companion.
Sherman also loved visiting casinos and trying his luck at the slot machines, but nothing brought him more joy than spending time with family and friends. He was a gifted storyteller who could light up a room with his humor and warmth. Everyone loved a visit with Sherman.
He was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend. His deep Christian faith was central to his life. He loved Jesus Christ and was well-versed in the Bible, having read it several times throughout his life.
Sherman is survived by his beloved wife, Lynne Smith, his children, Troy Smith and Shannon (Kirk) Smith; his twin brother, Sheridan Sheldon (Gay) Smith; and his sister, Patricia Whetman. He leaves behind 8 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Sherman Sheldon Smith and Ella Blanche Brough Grace; his son, Shane Sherwin Smith and sister, Geraldine Smith McClellan.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, October 24th at 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Mountain View Mortuary, 3115 East Bengal Blvd., Cottonwood Heights, UT 84121.
Sherman’s life was a testament to service, love, and the joy of simple things. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
