Obituary

Stanley James Gordon, our loved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at home with his family on Thursday, February 5, 2026, after a fight with cancer. Stan was born on June 15, 1945. His father was Harold Arthur Charles, and his mother was Joyce Rolaine Sehrt Gordon. After living in Chicago, IL, and Berkley, CA, Joyce and Stan moved to SLC to live with Stan’s grandparents, Ethel and Henry Sehrt. Throughout his life, Grandpa Sehrt was a mentor and father to him.

Stan and Grandpa Sehrt (Silver Beaver Award) were avid Scouts. Stan proudly became an Eagle Scout at 14 and gave back as a camp counselor and volunteer over the years. One of Stan’s lifelong joys from Scouting was amateur radio with his friends. As a HAM Extra Class, he reached across the world as K7JIZ on all bands using CW, voice, and digital.

Stan found his career early in ROTC at East High School, where he was Cadet Lt. Col (Group Commander). He continued in ROTC at the University of Utah. After graduating in Geography, he served as an officer on active duty in the Army Artillery in Vietnam, an instructor at Fort Sill, and a tour in Germany.

During this time, he married Susan Hope Neill. They have four children. They enjoyed traveling a great deal in his different commands. They returned to SLC, where he attended the University of Utah and graduated with his Master’s in Business Administration. He began serving in the Utah National Guard in 1978 and did civilian work for a decade. In 1987, Stan and Sue separated and then divorced. In 1988, Stan went to the War College in Alabama.

In 1989, Stan married Darcia Jean Mallory, who was a nurse at the University Hospital at the time. They have two children. The blended family moved to Holladay, UT. He began working full-time with the Utah National Guard. He was proud that among his accomplishments was the 2002 Olympics with security and control center operations. He was proud of the Utah National Guard and the extent to which they served and supported. His greatest concern was training and wanting well-prepared soldiers to return home to their loved ones. He retired in 2005 as Asst. Adjutant General of the Utah National Guard (Brigadier General) after 30 years of service in the military. His commitment to the military continued as he volunteered with the Fort Douglas Museum to collect memories of Utah history.

Stan always took care of his family. He loved his beautiful wife and benefited from her care over their years together. Stan would often ask his adult children what he could help them with. He enjoyed hearing from and about his family and their adventures all over. He was a good dad and a good man. He is remembered for smiling a lot. He enjoyed sailing, skiing, and woodworking. He enjoyed traveling.

Over the last 15 years, he has had different medical challenges. With Darcie, he has persevered, smiling a lot, connecting with family members near and far, and telling awful, funny jokes. During this time, his love for his family grew. He recognized and often expressed how he relied on Darcie, who took care of him so very much. His strength will live on in all our hearts.

Stan is survived by his loving wife, Darcia Mallory-Gordon; his children Richard (Staci) Gordon, James (Jill) Gordon, Jennie Weltzin (Brad), David Gordon, David (Tiffani) Colton, and Elizabeth Gordon. He and Darcie have 14 grandchildren.

Thanks to many care providers from Canyon Hospice and Home Health, Huntsman Cancer Hospital, and the University of Utah Hospital.

In lieu of flowers, Stan and the family request donations be made to the Huntsman Cancer Institute to help others.

You may visit with the family at a viewing on Friday, February 13, 2026, from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at Memorial Redwood Mortuary, 6500 South Redwood Road, West Jordan, Utah.  Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m., with interment at 12:00 noon, all at the same location.
