Stephen LeRoy Cornwall passed away on December 9, 2013, with his children at his side. He was born September 10, 1920, in Salt Lake City to Lenora Jane Hill and Alma M. Cornwall. He served an LDS mission in the Southern States Mission and graduated from the University of Utah (B.S. Engineering). He served in the Navy. He married Jaclyn McAllister in 1943. They raised their family in Salt Lake City. He built their first home on 3900 South across the street from the Cornwall homestead. He later built a home in East Millcreek.
Steve worked in the construction industry, eventually establishing the Stephen L. Cornwall Company as a family business. He was most proud of the construction projects that blended his love of building with a love for history. His construction firm moved Brigham Young's Forest Farmhouse from Forest Dale to This is the Place Heritage Park in preparation for its restoration. Later he built a replica of the original Social Hall and he moved several original pioneer homes from various locations in Utah to the Park. At a great personal sacrifice to him and his family, the Stephen L. Cornwall Company quarried the stone used to remodel the Manti Temple from the original quarry in the early 1980s.
Steve's life was driven by a desire to serve. He served in many capacities in the LDS Church and was a well-loved teacher. He was a veil worker in the Jordan River Temple for 18 years and volunteered for many years as a Chaplain for the Salt Lake City Police Department. His life was long and well-lived. He touched the lives of many and his teachings of love, service, hard work and determination will continue to shape the lives of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife Jaclyn, a granddaughter Jean Cornwall and a grandson Maxwell Pancoast. Stephen is survived by six children, Kenyon (Martha) Cornwall, Bruce (Collette) Cornwall, Marie Cornwall, Michelle (Kim) Kruger, Stewart Cornwall, and Janet Pancoast-Herring (Ken Herring); 18 grandchildren, and 31 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 14, 2013 at Noon at the East Mill Creek 2nd Ward, 3750 South Hillside Lane (2600 East).
