Susan Jean Barnes

December 30, 1941 — May 30, 2024

Together Again

Our loving mother, wife, sister, grandmother, great grandmother and friend passed away on May 30, 2024 peacefully surrounded by her family at the age of 82 due to complication from a stroke. Susan was born December 30, 1941 to Milton Otto Holmquist and Grace Elizabeth Melgaard.

Susan graduated from Murray High School in 1960.

Susan was working at the Woodland Drive-In theater in Salt Lake as a car hop when she met our father.

She married her sweetheart, Glen Alan Barnes on February 24th, 1961. They were later sealed in the St. George Temple. Susan was a member of  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held multiple callings throughout her life.

Susan loved to sew clothing for her family and as a result she opened her first business Sue's Fabrics in her garage. The business grew so fast it was later moved to a store front located at 4091 South State Street in Salt Lake City.

Susan & Glen joined the Amway Corporation in 1978. They were very successful in their business as Direct Distributors.

Susan and her family moved to Fairview Heights, Illinois for a new job in June of 1984.

Susan's husband, Glen, was called to be the Branch president of the Waterloo Illinois Branch. While he served in this calling he became very involved in supporting missionary work and Susan grew to love the missionaries and having them over for dinner or taking them on their 'P' days to the St. Louis Arch, the zoo and the St. Louis Cardinal games. She would make sure that the missionaries had whatever they needed.

Susan also enjoyed attending auctions with our dad. They would buy antiques and restore them. Susan also started a craft business with her daughter and daughter-in-law and traveled around to multiple states to set up craft booths to sell their crafts. After the family returned to Utah, Susan also set up booths in The Quilted Bear.

Susan's most precious times were spent with her family. Many family activities were related to the outdoors such as hunting, fishing, camping, and boating. She also enjoyed going to movies and dinner. She was also excited to attend all family trips and family parties. She enjoyed attending sporting events to watch her children and grandchildren.

Susan loved (and I mean loved) reading romance novels and would stay up til late hours of the night to read them. Later on in her life she enjoyed coloring and working on puzzles. Susan was a good listener, loving, compassionate, kind, caring, talented, smart, and genuine.

Susan is survived by her brothers, Robert Holmquist, Brad (Tina) Holmquist, and Brent (Debbie) Holmquist; children, Kevin (Karen) Barnes, Stacey (Steven) Berg, Paige (Todd) Nielsen, Courtney Barnes, Justin (Karli) Barnes; 10 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Susan was preceded in death by her husband Glen Alan Barnes, and her parents Milton Otto Holmquist and Grace Elizabeth Melgaard.

Special thanks to Riverway Assisted Living and Atlas Hospice for taking care of Susan in her final days.

Mom, we love you and we will miss you very much.
