Dr. T. Allan Pryor

December 5, 1937 — March 15, 2009

Our beloved husband, father and grandfather, T. Allan Pryor passed away on March 15, 2009 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Allan was born on December 5, 1937 in Compton, California, the son of Daniel and Alice Pryor.

In 1962, Allan graduated from Long Beach State College, California. He received a M.S. degree in mathematics from the University of Utah. He earned a Ph.D. in electrical engineering also from the University of Utah in 1972. There he wrote the first computer program to automatically interpret an electrocardiogram. He joined the faculty of Medical Biophysics and Computing at the University of Utah. He did his research at LDS Hospital where he was the principal architect of the first computer-based medical record system that included a knowledge base to facilitate medical decision-making. He was beloved by his many graduate students and retired in 2001 as Professor of Medical Informatics and Chief Medical Informatics Officer for Intermountain Health Care. Many of his former students now occupy key positions in academic and business institutions developing computer-based solutions to medical problems in countries around the world. He received the Legacy of Life Scientific Award from the Deseret Foundation at LDS Hospital in 2006.

Allan loved serving in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a mission for the church in Uruguay, and enjoyed speaking Spanish. He was an avid genealogist and loved to talk about his family history. For the past eight years, he and his wife have worked in the Salt Lake Temple.

Allan had enormous passion for his family, especially his grandchildren, golf and traveling.

Survived by his wife, Karen; daughter, Lisa (Christopher) Brennan; and son, Russell (Gigi Whaley) Pryor; six grandchildren: Marnie, Christopher, Patrick Brennan and Tatiana, Cosette, Mabelle Pryor; two brothers, Gordon (Delores) Pryor and Daniel Kay (Marsha) Pryor. Preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview 1st Ward, 2930 South 2000 East. Friends and family may visit on Friday evening, March 20, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, and at the church Saturday, March 21, 2009 from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior to services.
