Thomas E. Burkhardt

1957 — 2025

Thomas Edward Burkhardt Jr., affectionately known as Tommy or Tom, passed away at the age of 68. He is survived by his loving sisters, Alice Abraham-Benson and Margie Crain, and his beloved nieces, Sarah Abraham, Jamie Abraham, and Rachel Crain.

Tom graduated from Nordonia High School in 1976 and began his working life at the Little Tykes factory in Hudson, Ohio. He later attended a local vocational school to study auto repair, earning his certification. Determined to broaden his career path, Tom went on to earn his Associate’s Degree from Cuyahoga Community College, followed by a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychiatric Social Work from Kent State University. He then completed his Master’s Degree at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker specializing in adolescent behaviors.

Tom devoted his professional life to serving others, working for the State of Ohio as a psychiatric social worker. He counseled clients of all ages, from young children to adults, and also served as a case manager, helping many—including veterans—find support and stability. His work left a lasting mark on the lives of countless people in his community.

From childhood, Tom dreamed of being a “community helper”—telling his parents in first grade that he wanted to be a policeman or fireman. In many ways, he fulfilled that dream through his life’s work.

Outside of his career, Tom was known for his big heart, goofball humor, and his ability to make everyone smile. He loved spending time with family and friends, often enjoying board games like Monopoly, Chess, Life, Uno, and Checkers. His hobbies included treasure hunting and thrifting, building model cars and WWII planes and jeeps, and working on his beloved 1973 Barracuda. He admired the courage of Desmond Doss, the WWII medic and conscientious objector, and had a deep love for music. He also had a special fondness for cats, often taking in strays who needed a place to call home.

Ever the encourager, Tom inspired his nieces to save and invest their money, always looking out for their futures. His life was one of service, humor, and generosity—and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
