Grandpa J
Tom Jacobsen, loving husband, dad, grandpa, friend, and still our hero at age 92, passed away early Tuesday morning, May 25, 2010 after enduring a long illness. He was born on September 15, 1917 in Manti, Utah to Danish immigrant parents, Thomas Christian and Kirstine Petersen Jacobsen. He grew up in the Salt Lake Valley, graduating from West High in 1933. During the Great Depression, he joined the CCC's. He served in the Army during World War II, stationed in Great Britain, North Africa and Italy. He married Marjorie Grace Sutton in Oakley, Kansas on June 18, 1946. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were happily married for 62 years, raising five children.
He served faithfully in several church callings, including counselor in a bishopric, Sunday School president, and assistant to a High Priest group leader, and was an especially dedicated home teacher. Tom and Marge were members of a group from the old 16th Ward who called themselves the "Sixteeners". The group has met monthly for over 70 years. He worked in the grocery business for many years, and owned his own store near the University of Utah. He always worked very hard to provide for his family.
Tom loved to grow his own fruits and vegetables, and spent many hours working hard in his garden. He loved to share the harvest with others and frequently took produce from the garden to the food bank or shelters.
He is survived by four of his children; Jan (Mat) Amundsen, Chris (Julie), Craig (Marcia), Russ (Kathy), all of Salt Lake City. His posterity also includes 17 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Marge, daughter, Judy Theurer, and his three brothers and three sisters.
He will be deeply missed and loved forever by family and those whose lives he influenced. We love you, Grandpa J!
The family expresses deep appreciation to the incredible staff of Harmony Hospice Care and Sunrise of Holladay care center, who took such wonderful care of our dad and grandpa.
