Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and friend died peacefully in his home on October 6th 2013.
Ivar was born in Drammen Norway on July 7th 1925. He was the second son of Ingvald and Anna Evjen. Early in his life he developed an interest in telephone communication. His interest was encouraged by his father, Ingvald. His father helped secure him a job at the local telephone company, where Ingvald worked as a foreman.
As a young man Ivar saw and experienced much of the horrors of the Second World War in occupied Norway.
In 1949 Ivar meet a young and attractive woman who was a student nurse in Drammen's hospital, which was virtually next door to the family home. Ivar picked his future bride, Aslaug, from among the attractive nurses that paraded by his window each day. They were married in January 1950. In February of 1952, their first child, a son was born. Over the next decade 5 more children blessed their lives; 3 boys and 2 girls.
During the year of 1955, Ivar and Aslaug were contacted by the LDS missionaries. They eventually accepted the gospel and in 1957 made the important decision to immigrate to the United States. In the following year, with 3 small boys in tow, Ivar and Aslaug made their way to the U.S. and eventually settled in a home in Sugarhouse.
During these years in the United States, our father worked to support his family and continued his education in telecommunications and earned his Bachelors of Science degree from BYU. Engineer Evjen aided in developing specialized communication systems for clients. He became a liaison for the Norwegian telephone and telegraph company here in the U.S., where much of his responsibility was translating technical English data to Norwegian.
Eventually he became his own boss and ran his own business known as American Line Systems. After retirement he continued to dabble in radio and communication as a hobby. During his retirement years he has also aided family members in completing family research.
This kind man has been released from his arthritic and worn body. He will be remembered for his patience, love, compassion and his decadent cooking.
He is survived by his wife, Aslaug, of 63 years, his 6 children; Thor (Trinka) Evjen, Bjorn, (Barbara) Evjen, Knut, (Ennis) Evjen, Ingrid (Keith) Braden, Per (Kjrsten) Evjen, Solveig (Michael) DesJardin, 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Friday, October 11, 2013 at 11:00am at the Edgehill Ward, 1750 South 1500 East, where friends and family can visit at 10:00am prior to the service. Messages to the family can be posted at: www.HolbrookMortuary.com
