Vera V Bethers

December 16, 1936 — June 6, 2023

Vera Tschocke Vieregge Bethers

Vera Bethers, age 86, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2023. She was born Dec 16, 1936, in Silacia, Prussia, East Germany, pre World War II, to Paul Richard Tschocke and Emma Louise Strauss. She lived there and suffered many hardships through the war until early adulthood when she and her family immigrated to America. Here she met Gunter Fritz Hermann Vieregge. They married on March 7, 1958. Marriage later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they raised four daughters. Mom worked several jobs through the years, including as a care giver at her sister’s Nursing Home. Mom studied harder than she ever had before to pass the exam needed to dispense the medication. She was always working hard, never sitting and relaxing. Several years after Dad’s untimely death in 1981, she married (Richard) Afton Bethers where they had several years together before his passing in 1994. Afton’s passion was fishing. Together they took many fishing trips, often to Washington, where Mom learned how to navigate the procedure of the boat ramp, backing the trailer into the water, no easy feat.

Mom loved to read, sew, sing and dance, never tiring. When her husband was exhausted from dancing, she’d find another partner to tucker out. Her life long passion was serving others. She spent many hours making blankets and quilts to donate to humanitarian service projects. When she was younger, she’d be chauffeur to countless elderly friends and neighbors who didn’t drive, taking them to doctor’s appointments, pharmacies, to pick up groceries, or visit a loved one.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and totally faithful and devoted to our Savior Jesus Christ and God the Father. She held many various church callings including Primary Secretary and Relief Society President (several times, and in more than one ward.) You couldn’t slow Mom down. As a widow, she took in many elderly people who needed a full time care giver. It was so incredibly difficult for her when her health and memory began to fail and she had to give it up and allow others to take care of her.

She is survived by her daughters: Susan (Ron) Caruso, Sylvia (Mark) Rimmasch, Chris (Craig) Aardema, Becky (Gary) Atkins, nine grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren (with one of the way.) She is preceded in death by her parents, her two sisters, and her husbands.
