Walter Ted Dowsett

November 7, 1930 — November 12, 2022

Walter Ted Dowsett, beloved husband, father, friend, and “Builder of Custom Homes,” passed away November 12, 2022.  He was a perfectionist and an artist who completed each task in his life with precision and exactness.  Whether he was constructing a beautiful, first-rate home, or fishing and hunting, he gave everything he did his all.
Born on November 7, 1930, Ted was the fifth child of Harold Henry and Nellie Irene Anderson Dowsett. He grew up during a time when everyone had a job to do in order for their family to survive.  He learned to work hard and that “anything worth doing was worth doing well.”  His early years were spent in Holladay, living in the family home, built by his father.  The family property included an orchard, a barn, a chickencoop, and a pig pen.  Almost all of the things the family needed were produced by the family’s hard work.
As Ted was growing up, he enjoyed playing baseball as a member of team that included many of his lifelong friends.  It was at a baseball game at Holladay Elementary School, that he met the love of his life, Catherine Simons.  Catherine started the flirting by commenting on his shiny new car and Ted was smitten and followed Catherine home.  They were married four years later and went on to have three children, Christine, Diane, and Brian.  Ted continued the family tradition of teaching his children to work hard, and Brian followed in his footsteps by becoming a builder of quality, custom homes.
Many beautiful homes in Holladay, Olympus Cove, Salt Lake City, including the Avenues and University neighborhoods, Cottonwoods, and Oak Hills, were built by Ted.  His family has always been proud of his work ethic and integrity, besides the fine craftsmanship exhibited in the homes he built.
Ted was generous with his time, talents, and means.  If he saw someone in need, whether it was a small problem or a big problem, he stepped in to help.  His children remember him coming home from a long day’s work, cleaning up, and then heading out to lift someone in need. Whenever his own children needed any kind of help, they knew they could depend on Ted coming to the rescue, doing whatever it took to fix the problem.
When Ted retired from building homes, he continued to be active in hunting and fishing (Lake Powell and Flaming Gorge), and started playing golf.  He made new golf buddies and developed a cute sense of humor not seen before.  Ted and Catherine served in the baptistry at the Jordan River Temple for ten years, enjoying the time with many old friends and also making new friends.
Ted was preceded in death by his parents, Harold H. and Nellie Anderson Dowsett; brothers and their wives, Darwin (Evangeline) Dowsett and Leland Harold (Marjorie) Dowsett; sisters and their husbands, Verda Ydune (Whitney) Hammond and June Irene (Hal F.) Hardy.  Ted is survived by his loving wife, Catherine, his children, Brian Ted Dowsett (Rebecca), Christine Dipietro (Al), Diane Waldron (Robert).  Also, eight grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
