He was the youngest of three children of Ira and Luella Kimball. He graduated from Granite High School in 1943. While a senior in high school, he signed up for the Army Air Corp. As an Air Force Lieutenant during World War II, he flew many missions over the Himalayas between China and India. Following the War, he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Ann Beesley, April 24, 1946 in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. Wayne graduated from the University of Utah.
