Wells Sutliffe Maudsley, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away November 14, 2010 in Salt Lake City, surrounded by his family. He was born April 20, 1915 in St. George, Utah to William F. and Arseneth Gifford Maudsley. He lost his father in 1920 in an accident involving a horse leaving his mother and 5 children. The following year they moved to Salt Lake by way of covered wagon in the last vestiges of frontier America. His mother married Lawrence Mayers and they had one child together and raised Wells, his 3 brothers and sister.
Wells loved the out of doors and was an avid skier and golfer. He skied into his late 70's and golfed into his 80's. He joined the National Guard in 1940 and was a Staff Sergeant when the war started at Pearl Harbor. He served in WWII for six and a half years and spent the last year of the war in the Alaskan Department. He had a command of over seventy men and was responsible for writing the supply manual for the U.S. Army. He was separated from the service as a Chief Warrant Officer in April 1946 and was very proud of his service to his country. Wells joined the New York Life Insurance Co. in San Francisco as an agent in 1948, and at his death he completed over 60 years as an active agent.
He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as a High Priest and a group leader at Temple Square. He loved music and joined the Tabernacle Choir in 1935 and was with the choir 25 years.
In 1947 he married Frances K. McNamara and had three sons and a daughter, Cameron, Steven, Sue and Christian. The marriage ended in 1970. In 1973 he married G. Bertie Moffat in the Provo Temple for time and all eternity. Wells was preceded in death by his son Cameron R. Maudsley. Wells is survived by his wife, three sons, three daughters, Steven W. Maudsley (Rhonda), Thomas M. Moffat (Ling), Kathleen L. Morones (Edward), Sue M. McMillin (Ronald E.), Sherrie M. West (Thomas L.), and Christian J. Maudsley (companion Janette). He has 12 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Inspiration Hospice for their love and care, as well as Legacy of Taylorsville and the CNAs at Millcreek Assisted Living.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 20, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Garden Heights Ward, 2220 East Fisher Lane (2935 South). Friends may call Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, and at the church Saturday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. Interment: Mt.
