William Irving Ross, age 76, passed away surrounded by his loving and devoted family in his home in St. George, Utah, on June 23, 2025, after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer. He was born on May 17, 1949, in Price, Utah, to Eugene Willis and Melba Marie Leonard Ross.
He married Sherrie Johnson in June 1968. She was his high school sweetheart and the love of his life for 57 years. Together, they built a beautiful life rooted in love, laughter, and enduring traditions.
Bill worked at Kennecott Copper Mine for 33 years and loved being a locomotive engineer. He also worked as a general contractor for 34 years. The guys he worked with became lifelong friends. He demonstrated the same integrity and dedication in his work that he showed in every aspect of his life. He worked tirelessly to provide for his family and left behind a legacy built on love, humility, and hard work.
Bill had a deep love for the outdoors. Whether he was boating on Lake Powell with his family and friends, fishing at sunrise, teaching someone to water ski, golfing wherever he could, or camping under the stars, he was in his element–creating unforgettable memories. He lived fully and purposefully, cherishing every moment with the people he loved most.
Affectionately known as “Billy”, he was the heart of his family–a remarkable man whose strength, warmth, and generosity left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He brought joy, laughter, and good energy into every room. A gifted teacher and natural leader, he was the one everyone turned to for advice, help, or simply a listening ear. He could build anything, fix everything, and was always the first to lend a hand. To those who knew him best, he was the G.O.A.T.–the Greatest of All Time. His presence brought comfort, and his love brought strength.
Music, especially the oldies, brought him joy, and he was passionate about traveling, laughing, and making memories. He created many videos of his travels and memories that the family enjoys watching together. He enjoyed socializing and playing games with family and friends. His devotion to his family was unwavering–he was a proud father, an adoring grandfather, and a loyal friend.
Bill will be remembered as a strong, kind, and generous man who made the world a better place. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
Bill was preceded in death by his father, mother, brother, Richard Jay Ross, and brother-in-law, Wilford Paul Erickson.
