Zola Rice Pound

August 20, 1922 — July 4, 2011

A bright and beautiful woman departed this world on July 4, 2011. Zola Rice Pound died in Salt Lake City, Utah of causes incident to age.

She was born to Lyman Stevens Rice and Florence Todd Rice August 20, 1922 in Farmington, Utah.

One of eight children, she grew up on the family farm in Farmington. That meant lots of work, but also lots of fun and mischief. She and her siblings had a relationship marked by genuine affection and generosity. As each grew to independence, they helped the next in line. Thanks to enlightened parents, the whole brood graduated from college.

Zola graduated from Davis High School where she was editor of the Year Book. She attended the University of Utah and was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority. She graduated with a B.S. degree in Business and went to work for the RFC (Reconstruction Finance Corporation) housed in the historic Dooley Building in downtown Salt Lake City.

Five years later, she spread her wings by becoming a stewardess with United Airlines at a time when requirements were stringent: two years of college and a comprehensive training program. With her good looks and charm, she was a natural for the job. She was stationed in New York and Denver where she met her future husband, Perry Edward Pound. They were married in Denver in 1952.

Due to Perry's involvement in the oil industry, the couple lived in many locales: Scotts Bluff, Nebraska; Englewood, Colorado; Casper, Wyoming; Sheridan, Wyoming; and in retirement, Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

At every stop, Zola found challenging work. She managed a fine men's store in Denver, a sporting goods store in Casper and an elegant Peruvian import store in Steamboat Springs.

She was an avid skier, jogger and bridge player.

She was preceded in death by her husband, brothers Lyman Allen Rice, Arthur Todd Rice and a beloved sister, Lucy Rice Freeman. She is survived by a brother, Harold D. "Scott" Rice and his wife Barbara, sisters Afton Rice Morris, Helen Rice Wolford and her husband Richard, as well as many nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by a devoted sister and care giver, Alice "Pat" Capson Brown and two special nieces who were her surrogate daughters: Patrice Capson Henriksen and Cindy Rice Lynn.

A private memorial service will be held for the family at a later date. Messages and tributes to the family can be posted at: www.holbrookmortuary.com
