Do I need to pre-plan my funeral, and what are the benefits?

While pre-planning isn't a requirement by any means, many families tell us that having funeral, cremation, and cemetery plans paid and planned in advance helps alleviate the stress and burden when a death occurs. We offer pre-planning options for funeral, cremation, and cemetery needs.

How long does it take for a cremation to take place in Utah?

Cremation can usually take place within 7-14 days of the death. The biggest hurdle is typically obtaining the signature of the doctor for the death certificate, which is required before we are able to obtain the cremation permit from the state of Utah.

Can we personalize a funeral or memorial service?

Absolutely, yes. At Memorial  Holladay Cottonwood Mortuary, personalization is our specialty. We will work with you throughout the process to create a custom, personalized remembrance event for your loved one. We have extensive experience creating unique funeral services, ranging from large events for public figures, to highly personalized experiences.

How do I choose a funeral home - What should I look for?

When choosing a funeral home in Salt Lake County, we recommend you focus on trust, communication, and service. Ask how they personalize services, how they support families throughout the process, and what they will do to support you during this difficult time. Most importantly, choose a funeral home that listens to you and treats you with the same care and respect they would their own family

What is direct cremation? Is it a good option?

Direct Cremation is a method of disposition where the funeral home provides the cremation of the decedent with no additional services; no viewing, no memorial service, absolutely zero time with your loved one. We know we are biased, but we feel strongly direct cremation is not the best option for most families. Time with your loved one, viewings, services, celebrations of life are all important rituals that start you on a healthy grief journey.

What should I bring to the arrangement conference?

We recommend you bring at least the following to your arrangement conference:

  • Biographical information (birthdate, social security number, full names of parents, etc.)
  • Photos and information you would like in the obituary
  • Clothing for the deceased
  • Military paperwork
  • Insurance information if your loved one had a pre-arranged funeral plan
  • Cemetery paperwork

What cemetery options are available?

Memorial Holladay Cemetery, just a mile down the road in historic Holladay has many beautiful cemetery options for all types of preferences for Salt Lake County families, including in-ground burial, cremation permanent placement, mausoleum placement, and private family estates.
