Frequently Asked Questions about Funeral, Cremation and Cemetery Services in Sandy and Draper

How much does a burial or cremation cost?

Burial and cremation costs can vary widely depending on what different options and ceremonies you decide upon. A good rule of thumb for burial services is somewhere between $6,000 - $10,000. Cremation costs can vary a bit more widely from $10,000 on the high end to $1,500 on the low end, depending on the service options and mortuary you select.

What is the difference between a funeral, memorial service, and celebration of life?

Funerals, memorial services, and celebrations of life are all essentially the same! Each is a ceremony where you have an opportunity to gather as a family and community to honor the deceased, share memories, laugh together, cry together, and start you off to a healthy start in your grief journey. They can take place in a place of worship, in a funeral home's event hall, or in the venue of your choosing.

Is embalming required?

Embalming is not a legal requirement in Utah, though most mortuaries and funeral homes require it for open-casket viewings. This policy comes down to reputation — embalming greatly enhances the decedent's appearance, and while the immediate family may know embalming wasn't performed, other attendees likely won't, creating the potential for a negative impression of the funeral home's quality of care.

What are my cremation options in Sandy, Utah?

Your options for cremation are quite similar to your options with burial, including:

  • Full funeral or memorial service with the body present prior to cremation.
  • Cremation followed by a memorial service in the mortuary or place of worship.
  • Cremation with a private viewing for the immediate family prior to the cremation.
  • Cremation with no ceremony.
  • Any of these cremation options can also be followed by placement of the urn in a cemetery.

What cemetery options are available?

Our beautiful Lake Hills Cemetery has spaces available for all types of preferences, including in-ground burial, cremation permanent placement, mausoleum placement, and private family estates.

How long after a death is a funeral ceremony and/or cremation held?

This varies widely based upon a family's needs. Typically families will conduct funeral and memorial services within 5-10 days following the death of a loved one. Cremation typically takes place within 7-14 days following death, and is contingent upon the signing of the death certificate of the attending physician, which can sometimes create delays.

What should I bring to the arrangement conference?

We recommend you bring at least the following to your arrangement conference:

  • Biographical information (birthdate, social security number, full names of parents, etc.)
  • Photos and information you would like in the obituary
  • Clothing for the deceased
  • Military paperwork
  • Insurance information if your loved one had a pre-arranged funeral plan
